ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 15 Industry News The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) recently published its annual analysis Energy in Ireland, which shows that Ireland’s energy-related CO2 emissions increased by 5.4% in 2021. Emissions are returning to pre-Covid levels of 2019, and further increases are anticipated based on initial data for 2022. Two significant drivers of the increase included a rebound in car use as the economy returns to pre-Covid activity levels, and an increase in the use of coal and oil in electricity generation. The current level of progress in moving to renewables and eliminating our fossil fuel use is not at the rate required to achieve our climate ambitions. The report shows that the increase in 2021 emissions was driven by electricity generation (up 17.3%), transport (up 7.3%) and industry (up 3.3%) and compensated by decreases in residential (6.1%) and commercial and public services (2.7%) emissions. Looking to 2023, there are many measures we need to take to reduce our CO2 emissions, and these actions are now more urgent than ever. These include: • Develop further onshore and offshore wind and solar Ireland’s energy-related CO2 emissions heading in wrong direction • Develop more energy storage and electricity interconnection • Increase the number of journeys where we walk, cycle or take public transport and decrease those in petrol and diesel using vehicles • Deploy district heating networks at scale to replace gas and oil use for heating • Replace petrol and diesel vehicles with electric vehicles. • Upgrade the equivalent of 500,000 homes to a BER B2 rating or higher • Use more heat pumps in place of oil and gas boilers to heat buildings Margie McCarthy, Director of Research and Policy Insights ‒Energy in Ireland report shows that Ireland’s energy-related CO2 emissions increased by 5.4% in 2021. Emissions are returning to pre-Covid levels of 2019, and further increases are anticipated based on initial data for 2022. with SEAI says "Ireland has set strong targets in our carbon budgets, and legally enshrined them. We cannot afford to lose focus on the fact that these are annual budgets. Every year counts. If a target is missed one year, then the following years become more challenging. The Energy in Ireland findings show we are heading in the wrong direction, with our carbon budgets requiring a 4.8% decrease in emissions, yet in 2021 we have an increase in energy emissions of 5.4%. We must urgently move to renewables and use less oil, gas, coal and peat for our energy needs today to avoid making our future years even more challenging. We need a combination of increasing our generation of renewable electricity and switching to lowcarbon technologies, such as electric vehicles, district heating and heat pumps. In addition, we need to use less energy and use it more efficiently through building efficiency upgrades and through changes in how we travel, at an unprecedented scale". An updated Climate Action Plan is expected from the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC) shortly. This will provide an enhanced policy package and action list aimed at reversing the current emissions trends. The full report presents the latest national data and trends on energy efficiency and renewable energy in Ireland. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 17 Phoenix Contact Modular system for automated industrial identification The modular system consists of standard thermal transfer roll printers that can be combined with four different applicators. The three applicators for conductor and cable marking and one for terminal marking provide exible marking options to meet speci c needs. The Thermomark E.Wire produces a marking solution that can be moved radially and axially, and that is captive due to the weld seam. The Thermomark E.Sleeve applicator processes shrink sleeves in continuous format with a diameter of 0.8 to approx. 12 mm, cuts them individually to the desired length, and opens the printed markers for easy sliding onto conductors and cables. Self-laminating wrap-around labels for all types of cylindrical conductors, cables, and exposed conductive parts are processed using the Thermomark E.Wrap. The Thermomark E.Vario applicator marks entire terminal strips with just two materials in continuous format for high and at marking grooves. Furthermore, the system is suitable for different pitches between 3.5 and 1,000 mm. When used without an applicator, the four Thermomark E.300, E.600, E.300 D, and E.600 D roll printers also process the entire roll material portfolio from Phoenix Contact. The additionally available Thermomark E.Cutter and Thermomark E.Cutter/P cutting and perforating knives can be used for cutting material off the roll to length as well as perforating shrink sleeves for separation. High operating convenience with new connection technology No force or tools are necessary, ensuring a high level of operating convenience. This is made possible by the connection chamber being open in the delivery state. By tapping with the inserted conductor, the preloaded contact spring is triggered even by the smallest flexible conductors, and safe contacting is automatically established. This reduces installation times and enables faster wiring. As with Pushin, a conductor is released by actuating the orange pusher. This opens the connection chamber and tensions the contact spring at the same time. ‒ The new XTV terminal block family is the first product family with the new Push-X connection technology from Phoenix Contact. Compared to the existing Push-in connection technology, Push-X serves all conductor types in direct wiring without exception. The push button always displays the chamber position clearly, regardless of the conductor diameter and orientation of the terminal block. The XTV product range initially is comprised of the three cross-section ranges 6, 10, and 16 mm . The multifunctional properties of feed-through terminal blocks and multiconductor terminal blocks make it possible to use them in various control cabinet applications and in the eld. With testing that goes above and beyond the requirements of the standard, Push-X connection technology can also be used in industries that place high requirements on vibrations, gas tightness, and robustness. Due to the double function shaft, the XTV terminal blocks can be freely combined with the terminal blocks and accessories of the Clipline complete terminal block system. ‒ With the new Thermomark E Series product family, Phoenix Contact is providing a new solution for simple and efficient industrial identification. For the first time, the system automatically combines the printing and application of markings in one process step, thus achieving time savings of 60 percent compared with carrying out the work steps manually.

24 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • LoRaWAN stands for Long Range Wide Area Network. It’s an open source off-the-shelf communication protocol. It is used to connect sensors and devices to the internet. Once connected to the internet the devices can send and receive data wirelessly. Why LoRaWAN is the best network for smart buildings in Ireland LoRaWAN is not the only wireless network available for devices to connect to, there's a wide variety of others with differing capabilities. Well known networks include Bluetooth, WiFi, Zigbee and 5G. However, LoRaWAN is the best network choice for smart buildings for three key reasons. 1: Power & Range Excellent battery life and communication range. 2: Coverage Nationwide LoRaWAN coverage in Ireland. LoRaWAN sensors and devices in your building connect to the LoRaWAN network automatically. You do not need to install a router or hub to operate as a communication bridge. and managing energy usage is paramount. What are IOT Energy Monitors? Energy monitors are simple devices that monitor electricity usage in real time to varying degrees of detail. Din-rail meters such as the Eastron SDM-230-LoRaWAN are installed into a distribution board and capture crucial performance data e.g. Active Energy (KwH), Voltage, Current, Active Power (W), Power Factor. This data is uploaded at regular intervals to enable real-time monitoring and tracking. AMR (automated meter reading) sensors don’t require electrical installation and pick up pulses emitted by main electricity meters. The sensors collect the pulse RFE SDM230-LoRaWAN-MID ‒Take Control of your Energy Data while Reducing your Energy Costs on a LoRaWAN system. 3: Range of Sensors Smart and robust LoRaWAN sensors are currently available for a range of building management applications such as electricity, gas and water monitoring, temperature and humidity monitoring, air quality checks, asset tracking and more. Energy Monitoring For businesses, manufacturers and operations teams it has never been more important to track energy use. With prices increasing and climate obligations coming into force, understanding Energy Management Solution

ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 25 output from a meter and report this information. The pulses equate to consumption e.g. Kilowatt Hours of electricity or M of gas according to each meter. Sensors are able to communicate wirelessly with the nearest gateway or base station up to 5KM away. Once connected to a gateway or base station data is then pushed to the cloud where it is processed into meaningful information. The consumption information is tracked and reported via a software portal available on mobile, desktop or tablet. Critical Measurements Energy monitors track Kilowatt Hours i.e. they track your power usage in real time. The Safecility dashboard is packed with information that will help you manage your energy usage. View consumption graphs across your entire estate in real-time and export billing reports as needed. While reports make it easy to ful l your ESG (environment, social, and governance) reporting obligations and make smarter carbon reduction decisions. IoT devices collect information and wirelessly send it to the cloud. The information is then analysed and organised into an easy-to-read visual software dashboard or portal. RFE delivers remote monitoring of energy usage on a 24/7 basis. RFE and Safecility have a variety of wireless monitors that collect data in both Kilowatt hours or Amp Hours that are quick and simple to install for whole building metering or sub metering. Energy monitors allow building owners to track and report on ESG (ESG Environmental, social, and governance) metrics and gain billing certainty. Energy data is compiled into a web-based platform, with exportable results and graphical interface. Hence, the EU wants to phase them out through new restrictions and legislation. As a consequence, many tonnes of this toxic chemical element will no longer be polluting the environment. While some light sources have already been banned, the widely used T5 and T8 light sources will soon also become obsolete. While some light sources are already prohibited, these dates will apply to T5/T8. • Compact fluorescent lamps will be phased out from 25 February 2023. • T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes will be phased out from 25 August 2023. This will affect many buildings in Europe, and that is time to plan the transition to LED lighting. Ban on mercury in light sources, T5/T8 www.glamox.ie

ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 27 Glamox ‒ Energy prices and energy consumption is top of mind for everyone right now, and new legislation is pushing the change from traditional light sources to LED. Thankfully, modern technology offers innovative solutions like monitoring and light management systems, and Glamox can help provide a solution that is beneficial for both the environment and your energy bill. Glamox - Spotlight on energy saving What is the RoHS Directive? The RoHS directive - Short for Restriction of Hazardous Substances - is part of the EUs goal to phase out unnecessary toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment and to public health. The consequence is that light sources containing high levels of mercury will be banned, and many buildings will need to upgrade their lighting installation. A ban on mercury in light sources Light sources containing high levels of mercury have been found to have a signi cant negative environmental impact. Hence, the EU wants to phase them out through new restrictions and legislation. As a consequence, many tonnes of this toxic chemical element will no longer be polluting the environment. While some light sources have already been banned, the widely used T5 and T8 light sources will soon also become obsolete. How much can you save? Glamox have an Energy Saving Calculator on its website. This calculates the payback time when investing in an LED installation or an LED installation with control, versus an existing installation with conventional light sources.
