BelOrta is a co-operative that works with almost 1,000 local growers from the Voer region, via Antwerp to Zeeland growing the ‘tastiest vegetables and the juiciest fruit’. The Belgian company is very ambitious and has been described by the United Nations as a pioneer in implementing sustainability goals. With the construction of their new fully automated sorting centre, BelOrta, was able to centralise the three sites in Borgloon, Visé and Fernelmont in one location in Borgloon. As part of the plans for the new building, the company, which experienced exponential growth from producing ve million kilos of fruit at the packing station to 27.5 million and from three million fruit sorting to 42 million a year, needed a sustainable lighting control solution that would t with their ethos of reducing energy consumption to help save the planet. BelOrta turned to B.E.G. who implemented a state-of-theart lighting control solution that included a DALI lighting control system called DALI-LINK with detection. The bene ts of such a system were that it would be easily adjustable and controllable, while the occupancy sensors could measure ‘perfect’ light at high altitude on the ground, with a wide detection range. B.E.G. used a range of sensors for the project including detectors that could withstand low temperatures and condensation for BelOrta’s refrigeration cells where DALI was necessary as these are closed rooms without daylight. The German manufacturer also ensured that when the forklift trucks would drive in and out of the sorting centre that the sensors switched the lights off to save additional energy. B.E.G. also oversaw the installation of lighting control sensors and detectors in storerooms, toilets, stairwells, corridors, canteens, of ces as well as all outdoor lighting. Paul Jones, Sales Director of UK & Ireland at B.E.G, said: “The BelOrta project was a ne example of what the B.E.G. DALI-LINK system is capable of as a multipurpose intelligent lighting control solution. It comprehensively reached all the touchpoints required at this massive new sorting centre in Belgium and we’re very proud of this ‘world rst’. “The DALI LINK solution provided an easy way to provide a exible, scalable DALI lighting control system and, because it is Bluetooth-enabled system, it meant it was easy for BelOrta staff to con gure and change as room uses evolve, from changing scenes to adjusting the lights brightness.” Industry News
