Printed by W&G Baird Friday 17th, November 2023 Intercontinental Hotel, Dublin Happy New Year to all our advertisers, supporters and readers. Reflecting on 2023, the electrical industry experienced a mix of highs and lows. The initial months witnessed substantial growth, but consensus suggests a gradual tapering off as the year unfolded. Projections for GDP growth in the coming year indicate a moderate yet promising improvement over the previous period. The sector's focus on energy management and sustainability positions it to exhibit resilience throughout 2024. Despite these positive trends, the persistent challenge of securing adequately trained personnel remains a significant issue across the industry. While initiatives like AEW training modules for wholesalers and TUS engineering apprenticeship courses for electricians show promise, it is evident that a more concerted effort is required to address this ongoing concern. In this issue we have published the EMDA Directory of 2024 (page 57). This can be a handy pull out for contact numbers and a broad reference for product information. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 7 Industry News Hitachi Energy expands in Ireland, drives innovation and sustainability Expanding frontiers: A conversation with Andrew Rothwell Hitachi Energy’s expansion in Ireland is remarkable. Starting its journey in 2018/19, the company began with 40 staff members in Dublin and Waterford. Today, their workforce is over 70, with strategic of ces in Liffey Valley, St. Stephen’s Green, and Waterford. “We have established Liffey Valley as a hub for our operations and service departments. A second office in St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin, mainly looks after sales for the utilities,” explains Rothwell. “Waterford serves as a regional office for our transformer business with a focus on research and development. These locations are vital to our operations in Ireland, allowing us to collaborate efficiently with the key industry players.” Core business and evolution Hitachi Energy’s purpose revolves around advancing the world’s energy system to be more sustainable, exible and secure. Their core team, consisting of 10 individuals, including six engineers, plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of their diverse customer base, which includes utilities, industrial scale pharma and major data center clients. “Our service group plays a pivotal role in supporting our project business,” Burke explains. “Our responsibilities encompass installation, commissioning, and, crucially, addressing warranty issues and breakdowns that may occur during installations.” Meeting the Challenges of the Energy Transition Burke recognizes that the energy sector is evolving rapidly to decarbonize. With this comes new renewable energy sources and a need to update aging infrastructure. Ancillary equipment needs to be redesigned to accommodate uctuations in renewable energy sources – wind and solar- caused by their intermittent nature. “The energy transition is reshaping the entire energy landscape,” Burke says. “A significant challenge lies in the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources like wind and solar. Unlike traditional power stations operating on a constant load, renewables exhibit variability.” Hitachi Energy’s Service business is uniquely positioned to support this transition. Starting with existing infrastructure and addressing future needs, we offer exceptional service solutions that cover the entire lifecycle of assets. Hitachi Energy is not just expanding its presence in Ireland but also shaping the future of energy, e-mobility, and sustainable solutions, focusing on its purpose of advancing a sustainable energy future for all. With a commitment to safety, service, and innovation, the company contributes signi cantly to Ireland’s journey toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 11 Here are some testimonials from students who have participated in the programme recently: Patrycja Trudzik – Regional Support – Systems & Operations – Edmundson/EWL Electric – “I started studying the modules during my graduate trainee programme. I was working at the trade counter in the Glasnevin branch, which was very challenging for me from a product knowledge perspective. The modules helped me to develop my product knowledge very quickly and gave me confidence to provide a better service to our customers. My favourite modules include: “Renewables” and “IT and Data Infrastructure”. Renewables was a very interesting module, particularly EV charging and Solar PV. Both of these new technologies not only offer sustainable solutions to the challenges that the world faces with climate change, but they also open up huge commercial opportunities for everyone in the electrical industry. IT and Data Infrastructure was a very technical, but a practical module that explained some quite complicated processes very clearly and gave me a better understanding of equipment that we all work with on a daily basis. I would recommend AEW Staff Training Modules – Something for Everybody The AEW staff training programme has been running very successfully for a number of years. With over 300 students completing at least 1 of the 12 modules available, AEW Administrator, Ken Legros, tells us “The modules cover virtually every product category that electrical wholesalers stock and supply, with modules suitable for both beginners and experienced staff members too”. these modules to anyone who has an eye to the future.” Ethan Kerin – Branch Manager – CSGL, Ennis – “The modules extensively cover a wide range of product areas in a way that facilitates a thorough understanding of the course material and a comfortable learning pace. Well-structured assessments enhance the learning experience and the inclusion of textbooks serves as a valuable resource both during and after the courses. My two favourite modules were “Industrial Controls” and “Heating & Ventilation”. The Industrial Controls module explores components crucial to industrial processes, covering topics such as switches & indicators, relays & contactors, fuses & breakers, motor controls etc and helped me with problemsolving in real-life applications. The Heating and Ventilation course provides a thorough understanding of heating and ventilation systems, covering the principles of heat, elements controls, types of water heaters, the principles of ventilation and practical applications. This course gives you the skills required to comprehend, design and implement effective heating and ventilation solutions across diverse environments.” IndustryANEeWws Josip Barac – Stores/Sales – Kellihers, Kilkenny – “Overall my experiences with the training modules have been nothing but positive. My knowledge base has increased in relation to the products that my company stocks and I have been able to offer our customers a much better level of service as a result. I found two modules to be particularly beneficial. The Fire, Safety & Security Systems module showed me how different types of alarms, both fire and security, actually work, how they are used and how the end user can benefit from interconnecting each individual system to create a functional installation. The Lighting Systems & Controls module is very interesting, particularly as it focuses on LED lighting. This module explained how different types of controls can be used and how they can be combined to benefit a customer on a project.” The top students will be rewarded for their efforts at the AEW awards lunch on Wednesday 8th May 2024. Further details to follow nearer to the event. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION ON HOW TO GET STARTED, PLEASE CONTACT KEN LEGROS MOBILE 085-2072761 OR EMAIL AT admin@aew.ie

ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 17 When operating alternative power generation, grid and system protection is required by law and disconnects the power generation system (photovoltaics, generator, battery buffer) from the grid in the event of a power failure. This ensures the safety of the distribution network, machines and people. In case of a pre-de ned state of grid failure the grid and system protection separates the energy generator (photovoltaics, generator, battery buffer) from the grid. Its function is very important for the reliable protection of the power grid and generating plants because it ensures that the connection of an energy generator does not impair the function or safety of the distribution grid. Telehaase NA003 Grid Protection Device - Stay Compliant The new grid and system protection NA003-M64 from TELE Haase combines all standards in one device and can therefore be used universally. Functions TELE’s grid & system protection NA003-M64 consists of two components: • Protection relay that measures the grid voltage and grid frequency. It also contains the actual protection functions and generates the signal for grid disconnection. • 1-2 tie switches that ensure the actual disconnection from the mains. For high availability of the supply network, short-term grid disturbances must not separate the generators from the grid. This function, called Fault Ride Through (FRT), refers in particular to short-term undervoltages and overvoltages. Depending on the type and power of the energy generator, different requirements apply, those can be adjusted via the parameterisation of the NA003-M64. Your advantage • One device for local & international markets • Easy handling for service personnel and commissioning engineers • Pre-con gured parameter sets for different countries in Europe & worldwide • Individual solutions can be implemented through a variety of con guration options • Integrated FRT (Fault ride through) • Replaces older devices without changes in the control cabinet due to design and availability of older certi cates. ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 25 Phoenix Contact Compact and universal signal distribution Compared to a standard disconnect terminal block, the compact PT 2,52MTB reduces the length of the terminal strip by half. The new knife-disconnect terminal block is primarily used in wind turbines, in switchgear building, in process engineering, and in machine building for complex signaling tasks. It currently serves the cross-section range from 0.14 to 4.0 mm . The disconnect zones enable multiple bridging and testing tasks to be performed in one terminal block. In addition, each terminal block has its own test pick-off. The colored disconnect knives and actuating push buttons provide a good overview. The PT 2,5-2TGB disconnect terminal block is also available to match the knife-disconnect terminal block for use with plug-in fuse and device plugs. This terminal block also has two disconnect zones. PCB connectors with innovative Push-X technology Following the principle of a mousetrap, the conductor is caught simply by inserting it into the connector. Clamping contacts provide a long-term, reliable rigid and flexible connection for the conductors, with or without ferrules. When the conductor is inserted into the clamping space, it strikes the release element which then, with very little force, releases the contact spring. The pretensioned contact spring then permanently clamps the conductor with a de ned force. ‒The XPC 1,5 PCB connector from Phoenix Contact features direct plug-in connection with Push-X and thus enables fast and tool-free connection of various conductor types and cross-sections. An audible release sound and the changed position of the high-contrast orange release button tell the user that the conductor connection has been secured. The tool-free connection technology reduces assembly times and enables automated wiring. The release button is used to release the conductor and pretension the contact spring at the same time. The XPC 1,5 PCB connector is compatible with Phoenix Contact’s extensive COMBICON range with a 3.5 mm pitch. As a result, there are numerous combination options that cover a wide range of application versions. ‒The new PT 2,5-2MTB Push-in terminal blocks from Phoenix Contact have two disconnect zones. In conjunction with the three double function shafts, they enable a wide range of distribution applications to be realised in a small space.

30 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • Rittal The increased demand for rail travel necessitates urgent expansion of the existing infrastructure. Projects such as HS2 and TransPennine Route Upgrade in the UK are an example of increasing capacity, lowering carbon footprints, and improving connectivity. Upgrading and modernising aging infrastructure is crucial. Rittal are a leading provider of enclosures and enclosure cooling products.Their solutions span station systems, signaling, telecoms, security, and IT infrastructure. Digitalisation of Railways The digitalisation of railways in the UK has been a key factor in enhancing ef ciency, reliability, and passenger experience. A The Future of Railways: A Journey Towards Digitalisation, Safety, and Sustainability big example of this is the current deployment of the European Train Control System (ETCS) throughout various lines across the UK. This allows trains to run closer together and travel at their best speeds while maintaining safe braking distances. As the rail network becomes increasingly interconnected, the need for robust IT, signalling and telecoms infrastructure and secure enclosures to protect important active equipment has never been more critical. 1. Signalling and Communications Systems: Digitalisation involves the deployment of advanced signalling and communications systems to improve train control, traf c management, Station Information and Security Systems and Customer Information Systems. Rittal’s enclosures and cooling solutions help safeguard the essential equipment that powers these systems. 2. Data Centers: Railways heavily rely on trustworthy “data centers” or “comms rooms” for various operations; from ticketing to train scheduling. As passenger numbers rise and projects to meet this need progress; the need for quality, reliable solutions for comms rooms increases too. Modular and deployable IT infrastructure is a game changer in helping put the infrastructure where it needs to be, quickly, as opposed to making do with existing buildings in potentially inconvenient locations. Furthermore, highly ef cient and IT speci c cooling ‒For centuries, Ireland's railways have been essential to the nation's growth, connecting cities, towns, and communities. Looking ahead, the railway industry in Ireland is on the cusp of a transformative evolution, driven by digitalisation, safety improvements, sustainability initiatives, and efficient energy usage.
