14 ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • Mark Whelan from Hager Ireland, talks with Gareth Scott and gives us an insight into Troy Panels. He finds out what it’s like to work at Troy Panels, the type of work they do, projects they’ve been involved in, and what it’s like working within the regulations in Ireland. Tell us about yourself: At the heart of Troy Panels’ lies the visionary stewardship of both Gareth Scott and Martin McKenna. Since we started the company in 2006, our joint leadership has been instrumental in steering Troy Panels towards its current success. One of our key strengths has always been diversification. Through the years, we’ve propelled the company into many diverse sectors, from the intricate landscapes of food and beverage to the complexities of residential apartments, housing projects, and motor controls to great success. Our commitment to adaptability and innovation underscores our dedication to delivering excellence across every industry we touch. We oversee the entire production process in-house, and we work with a team of expert panel builders who consistently deliver the best quality work. Our sophisticated production procedures allow us to offer cost-effective solutions and remarkably fast turnaround times because every panel is created especially to fit the needs of our customers. Tell us about your company: Troy Panels are headquartered in Monaghan in our specially designed 12000sq foot workshop, where we employ over forty people and are constantly growing. Our skill set encompasses a wide range, from assemblers and electricians to engineers. Additionally, we have a sizable apprenticeship programme in which we mould and train our trainees to meet our exacting standards. Hager’s Panel Builder Spotlight: Troy Panels Hager’s spotlight on Troy Panels Left to right: Mark Whelan, Gareth Scott and Martin McKenna What area of the industry is your niche? We built our business by not tying ourselves to a “niche”. Initially Troy panels was formed in 2006 to supply the north-east with multi-metering and distribution boards locally. As the economy changed, we found we had to change too, from the domestic market to focus on the industrial we moved into more motor control and automation. As the markets changed we adapted with it, adding strings to our bow including renewables, data centres and as the housing market returned we had the facilities and expertise to cater for it. What type of projects have you been mostly working on during the last 12 months? We have been doing more of the same, residential multi-metering cabinet, ESB off loaders and motor control centres etc., but in addition to that, 2024 has seen a big increase for us in sectors such as renewables, G10 panels for industrial solar installation, MCC boards for bio-digestors as well a large increase in the EV sales, which has led to a massive demand in boards for charging stations. On top of this, we have found ourselves moving into the data centre market. It was not a sector previously of particular interest to us, but with the massive increase in cloud computing, we find ourselves being approached to submit tenders for various projects. How do you find working within regulations? Working within the regulations can be difficult but in turn we understand why we have such strict rules, especially in Iain McConnon

ELECTRIC.IE • The Magazine & Website for the Irish Electrical Industry • 15 Ireland. It’s in our interest that our panels are built to the highest standard for both safety and customer satisfaction. We have built up a team of engineers who have accumulated a wide degree of knowledge over various sectors, we feel this know-how in the current rules and regs has led to us to repeat work and harmonious relationship with consultant engineers. How important is working alongside a manufacturer? Having a supplier who understands the needs of a panel builder is imperative. Panel builders are the main point of contact regarding what engineers specify on ongoing projects. Typically, engineers and contractors don’t like to veer from what was set out and having a manufacturer who has both a wide range of products and the technical knowledge to back up these products is critical. Trying to shoehorn in an alternative or sometimes inferior component is not something that is feasible in the modern construction. What do you value most in a manufacturer? In no particular order; reliability, brand awareness and availability of product. Before any piece of switchgear is placed in any of Troy Panels boards the above criteria will have to be met. Using below par product is not an option for us and rarely pays, no matter how cheap it may seem to be. Having a reliable manufacturer installed will always pay for itself in the long run in both life of the product and our company reputation. Using a Manufacturer with a recognised brand name sells itself. Engineers tend to lean towards tried and test product and contractors feel more comfortable using what they are familiar with. This in turn makes a more seamless transition from initial submittal to onsite delivery of product. Availability of product has always been foremost in manufacturing, to the point that the above remarks become redundant if the switchgear is unavailable. Never was the switchgear market shown to be more exposed than during the pandemic and in subsequent years with various wars breaking the supply chain. Long established manufacturers have been found to handle these obstacles much better than less established brands regarding route to market. How does working with Hager help Troy Panels? Regarding any supplier-customer interaction, since our founding nearly 20 years ago, we have dealt with Hager, and we have always maintained an open line of communication. Over the years, we have faced many obstacles, not the least of which have been economic collapses, pandemics that disrupt the supply chain, etc. However, thanks to Hager’s expertise, access to their knowledgeable technical team, and broad product offering, alternate products, or expedited transportation, we have always been able to meet those crucial deadlines.
